What We Do

The primary work of Amigos Unidos is to improve our community through service. Members of Amigos Unidos work a minimum of 115 hours during high school assisting our partner philanthropies in the South Bay and beyond, offering boys the opportunity to engage in a variety of causes ranging from homelessness, hunger, the environment, youth with special needs, animals, veterans, at-risk youth and more.

A volunteer year spans June 1 to May 31. The minimum hour requirement per year breaks down as follows:

9th - 40 hours        10th - 30 hours

11th - 25 hours      12th - 20 hours

Eligible boys also are recognized annually for service awards within Amigos as well as the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards.

Amigos also cultivate a sense of belonging to a group, leadership and valuable time-management skills. Boys attend four mandatory meetings with their group during the school year, co-chair two of the meetings, and attend bonding, cultural and social events with their group.

Parent Role

Amigos Unidos requires one parent/guardian to make a four-year commitment to support their son by volunteering with their son in at least one event per year, co-chairing two meetings, and assuming an ongoing role with responsibilities within the son’s group. While conceived as a mother/son organization, Amigos Unidos recognizes that the involvement of an alternative parent or guardian may be needed given family circumstances.
